Bounced Email Issue  (United States)
Hi,

I did my first mailout and received many bounces (as expected).  When I go look at the bounced messages areas it does list those that bounced.  However the emails that are listed look like:

postmaster@registerdsite.com
postmaster@dockhs.org

etc, etc.

Now these do not match that of the email sent but are received back from the postmaster@...  So now I imagine this will not remove the original email address from the mailout as it can't relate it to the appropriate email address, correct?

If this is correct, how do I make the bounce messages actually work within the system so the appropriate emails are considered as bounced?

Thanks
James

I may be reading between the lines here.... but have you read the manual on the configuration of this feature?  If not. Please start there.

Re: Bounced Email Issue  (Australia)
I see you posted this in the wrong thread.

New post in Bulk Emailer:

Hi,

I have read the manual, and setup the bounce area appropriately.  Here is the issue I am inquiring about with a little more detail:

When I go into the bounced email area of the module to view a list of the bounced emails it shows an email address for all bounced emails, but this email address is the one that the email came from such as
postmaster@whatever.com, instead of the email address that was actually bounced.  In other words if you look at the bounced email itself you will see that it comes from postmaster@whatever.com and if you look at the content of that email you will see listed the actual email address that bounced such as name@whatever.com.  Now this is confusing when looking at the bounced emails in the module because obviously the postmaster@whatever.com email address is not the bounced email address, but just the server generated email address used for all bounced emails.

I am assuming the system is not looking at the sender of the email (in this case would be
postmaster@whatever.com) and is looking at the actual bounced recipient which would be name@whatever.com.  If this is the case then wouldn't it make more sense in the bounced area of the system to list the actual recipients email that was bounced and not the postmaster email address?

Thanks
James

Could you please provide some examples of the bounce email messages.

Re: Bounced Email Issue  (United States)
I am sorry I have removed those emails, but here is my point.  When I go to my bounced manager area it shows one of the bounces like the following.  Now this didn't bounce 167 times, it is a server generated email recipient of when other emails bounce.  In other words if there is a bounce, the server generates the bounce message from postmaster@netproteams.com.  Postmaster@netproteams.com is not even on my distribution list, it is simply a server bounce email.  If you look at any one of the 167 times it bounced in the content you will find the actual email addresses that bounced.  So I dont understand how this bounce manager actually gets the bounced emails.  Sorry if I am confused, but maybe your explanation will set me straight.

Thanks
James

Re: Bounced Email Issue  (United States)
Hi,

I really need to solve this problem, so let me please try to explain and I have a screenshot of the bounced emails to display.

I sent an email blast out to about 3500 email addresses.  About 58+ of them bounced.  If my recipient list included an address like name@domain.com (which would bounce) then the bounced message comes into my popbox (on the server) which is checked by the bounce manager in the system and it finds the email which has bounced and this email comes from postmaster@domain.com or mailer-daemon@domain.com.  It does not come from name@domain.com.  Now name@domain.com is still now on my recipient list and will bounce again the next time I sent out to this list because the system did not recognize name@domain.com as a bounced email because the bounced email came from postmaster@domain.com and not name@domain.com.

In the screenshot you can see I have 59 bounced emails from postmaster@soccerstopfangear.com.  This does no good, as what it needs to see is the actual recipients address in order to add that recipient email on the bounce list.  The only way it is going to be able to do this is to take a postmaster bounced email, read the content and pull out the actual recipient that bounced.

The system is not doing this now is it?  I need to send out some very large email lists and need it to clean my list up of bounces, but right now all it is going to do is take the postmaster addresses and put them into the database as bounced email addresses.  This of course does no good, as it doesn't block the email that actually was the one that bounced.

I hope this makes sense.  Please look at the image.

Thanks
James

Re: Bounced Email Issue  (Australia)
James,

The email bounce system relies quite heavily on the format of the bounce message. Unfortunately these are particulat to SMTP servers. We have written our software to regognise severy bounce system, but will keep inproving this.

It would be handy for you to post here a full bounce message, so we can see and adjust for accuracy. Remember to remove the real email addresses and replace with generic ones, or use an image again.

Incidentally you can always manually add bounce addresses. Not ideal, but it will still give the result.

Re: Bounced Email Issue  (United Kingdom)
Hi guys,

We're having a similar issue, all our bounce-backs are coming through the local postmaster address with the failed address in the message body, but its not being picked up (we get the postmaster address added to the bounce list). Here's an example bounce email:

------------------------
Your message

  To:      bounce@somedomain.com
  Subject: test4
  Sent:    Thu, 5 Mar 2009 12:33:32 -0000

did not reach the following recipient(s):

bounce@somedomain.com on Thu, 5 Mar 2009 12:33:32 -0000
There was a SMTP communication problem with the recipient's email server.  Please contact your system administrator.
    <DSVR008536 #5.5.0 smtp;550 Invalid recipient <bounce@somedomain.com> (#5.1.1)>
------------------------

Let me know if you need the headers. We're having a few other problems but I'll start a new thread for those.

Kind regards,

James
