Yes you can set position of top / bottom / or both of the paging navigation control. This is found under the 'Configure Module' menu and then under 'Announcement Configuration'. In there is a section called 'Paging Options'.

When you try to add a custom list of email addresses to the Email List management system. The import of the list fails with an error:

If you check the associated event logs in DNN you will notice a log file with the error:

Solution

There are two possible causes for this and two solutions.

Cause 1

The server is a 64 bit server running Windows 2008.

Solution 1

Under the Application Pool Advanced Settings, change the 'Enable 32-Bit Applications' fromt the default False to TRUE.

Cause 2

The Server is running without the normally default 'Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0' provider. This is a component that is usually installed by default with Windows 2003 and 2008 Server set up.

Solution 2

Just download and install the 2007 Office System Driver from Microsoft.

Solution

These were generated when DNN had a typo in the SMTP server name. By chance the SMTP server address started with a space ' ' or single spacebar followed by the correct name.

smtp.server.com with a ' ' before the 's' in SMTP.

For some reason, DNN test fine with this incorrect error, but out module that looks for the SMTP server name and pulls it with the invalid space will choke on the failed name.

So Please Check that your SMTP server name is typed correctly!

Additional Comments

In every case that we have found failures listed in BulkEmailer and it not sending any email, the cause has been due to SMTP server settings.

Problem

When visiting this search page http://www.interactivewebs.com.au/announceit/SearchExample/tabid/158/language/en-AU/Default.aspx we had an issue in the search not returning any results.

Solution

First step was to empty the site's recycle bin.
Then perform the following:

DotNetNuke should regularly update and re-index its search database. To check when it was last done, log on using the host account, then click on Host> Schedule - on this page should be an indication of when it was last run.

If you are having problems however, you can delete the index and restart it by following the instructions below.

Login as Superuser ('host' by default)
On the Host Menu click on the SQL option .
Copy the following 4 lines and paste them into the text box:

When you try to upload a file to a DNN website, you receive this error.

Solution

The File Permissions on Windows 2008 Server need file permissions adjusted.

Go on your webserver to your dnnwebsite folder.
1. Make a right-mouse click on the folder and choose 'properties' and go the the securtiy tab.

2. Make sure that the following users/rights are added to the list:

- IIS_[user] (in my case IIS_WPG) - Full control
- System - Full control
- Users - Read & Write access & special permission.

Question

When I create an email message in Bulk Emailer using te Rich Text Editor in DotNetNuke. The recipient cannot see any images and the links fail. Why?

Answer

The rich text editor, be it FCK or another custom editor in DNN is configured to drop url's from the full domain. e.g.

http://www.domain.com/image.jpg

becomes: /image.jpg

when created with the editor.

This is the design of the DNN platofrm. We have found the best solution to this problem is.

1. Send email from MS word Documents.

2. Send email from MS word Documents that have been saved at .mht or .mhtml. (gives more reliable outcome)

3. Create email messages in an editor like Dreamweaver, then copy the source code and paste it into the source view of the DNN Rich Text Editor. This will keep the full paths to the images and links.

Understand that the exact reason we created the send from MS Word or send from MHTML feture was to help novice users with this exact limitation of sending email messages from DNN.

We are using your Bulk Emailer module and want to know if there is a way we can set the HTML rich text editor so when an image is instered it includes the domain name rather than just the path from the domain?

Answer

Because this is a function of the editor in DNN and not a direct function of our Bulk Emailer module, we can only advise you on a handy way around this.

Create the email you want to send in an html application like Dream Weaver. When you have is how you want it, copy the source and paste it into the source view of the editor. This will keep the links.

Alternatively. Paste into MS word 2007 and send from that.

Where in Tell My Friend is the SMTP mail server settings set?

Answer

The module uses the SMTP settings configured in HOST SETTINGS area of DotNetNuke.

Sometimes users find that email was previously been sent to their mail account, but when using this module the email messages are not sent to external email addresses.

This indicates a configuration problem with the SMTP settings. If you can sent to local email addresses but not external email addresses, you probalby have not got permission to relay on the SMTP server set. Two solutions to this are.

Use Basic Autnetication to allow relay to external addresses, or
Set the SMTP server to allow relay from the IP address of your website.

Below is some notes on configuring DNN for SMTP.

DNN Websites have the ability to configure in the host settings an SMTP server.

When a DNN email is generated from the DNN website, it will attempt to send mail through this SMTP server.

In order that your DNN website can successfully send the email, the SMTP server must allow the email message to be received. Typically this is done in one of

Four ways to SMTP

1. The SMTP server is configured for Open Relay (This should NEVER be done unless you have an external firewall blocking all external SMTP connections. Otherwise your mail server will become a spam server within hours)

2. SMTP Authentication – Typically SMTP servers are configured to allow users with a valid username and password to authenticate themselves. Once they have been authenticated, they can communicate email messages through the SMTP server. This is the same way most ISP’s work their mail servers. The idea is that only users who are customers of the ISP will allow email to be sent from their SMTP servers.

3. Selective Open Relay. The administrator of the SMTP server can also allow Open Relay (same as 1 above) from selective IP addresses. Any communication from an IP address that is configured to allow open relay will be accepted by the SMTP server.

4. Local Host – If your website has it’s own SMTP server configured, typically it will allow email message to be sent form it’s self.

To correctly configure your DNN SMTP settings, you need to understand what method of communication has been configured in the SMTP server you are trying to set DNN to access.

Here is the process you would configure from above.

1. Enter the IP address or valid domain name for the SMTP server, nothing more to do if open relay is allowed. (Still not recommended)

2. Enter the IP address or valid domain name for the SMTP server, and the valid user name and password as would be used to communicate with the SMTP server. This is where you get to use the user name and password setting in DNN.

3. Ensure that the SMTP administrator has allowed the IP address your DNN website uses to have open relay status. Then just enter the IP address or domain name of the SMTP server in your DNN host settings.

4. Configure your DNN host settings to have “localhost” in the DNN SMTP server settings are.

Problems.

There can be some issues that get confusing with the different methods.

1. Open relay mail servers will be attacked by spammers very quickly. They are always on the lookout for mail servers that they can abuse. It is never recommended to have your mail server on the internet and in open relay. Additionally your mail server will be blacklisted by other mail servers if found to be in open relay.

2. SMTP Authentication can still be restricted to certain IP addresses. Many ISP’s will allow you only to use their mail servers while you are a client of their AND connecting to their mail server from an IP address they own. So thing will work in your Email applications while you are connecting to the internet via their dialup or high speed connection, but as soon as you move away from a connection provided by them, you will not be allows to connect to their servers, let alone Authenticate.

3. Even if your ISP has allowed relay from the address that your mail server is run form, there may be a firewall or block on the normal port that the SMTP servers are typically configured to use. Port 25. If a firewall exists between your web server and the mail server, it must be configured to allow traffic over port 25.

4. You may have web server configured with an SMTP server on the same system. Yet have it be blocked over port 25 for outbound communications. Some ISP’s block port 25 to curb the flow of virus email messages. You need to be sure that your ISP that provides connection to the internet for your web and SMTP server is not blocking port 25.

How to get really confused.

Often mail servers will allow you to send email messages to email addresses on that SMTP server, even though they do not allow you to send mail out. So if you have a web application configured to send email to yourself, and the SMTP settings you use in the DNN host settings are for the SMTP server that runs the same email address you will have success.

Yet when you change the email address in the web application, you can no longer send email, and the web application appears to fail. This is still an SMTP configuration error on your website. You will need to find a method above to solve the issue.

Setting the SMTP Server

Navigate to Host > Host Settings.
Maximize the Advanced Settings section.
Maximize the SMTP Server Settings section.
Enter the SMTP address of the server into the SMTP Server field. E.g. mail.dotnetnuke.com.
At SMTP Authentication, select from the following options:
1. Anonymous (This is the default option)
2. Basic
3. NTLM
In the SMTP Username text box, enter a SMTP Username if required.
In the SMTP Password text box, enter a SMTP Password if required.
Click the Test link to send a test email to the Host account.
- If the test is successful the message Email Sent Successfully will displayed. The email will be sent to the Host Email Address.
- If the test is unsuccessful a message describing the problem such as Could not access 'CDO.Message' object will be displayed.
Click the Update link.

Linking Custom Entities with relationship behaviour type set to Parental causes a No Attribute error when looking up other records.

Solution

To fix the issue, change the relationship between the Contact (system entity) and the Custom Entity to “Configurable Cascading” and set the Re-Parent property to 'Cascade None'; Save and Publish and your all set.

After you install the outlook client for Microsoft CRM and access CRM items from outlook, the system loggs you off and greys out the crm menu in outlook.

the reported message is that 'you have sucessfully signed out' from the icon at the bottom right of your screen that indicates connection to the CRM server.

Solution

This is a really easy fix! The problem is because the date and time on the computer you are using does not match the date / time on the server.

Check and fix the date / time on your local computer.

Close outlook
Open outlook and sign in
Your problmes should now be gone.

When testing on different browsers I noticed that Tell My Friend module behaves differently and sometimes erratically.

Solution

Erratic behaviour can be cause in DNN by cache settings. While the module is likely to perform well for end users, testing rapidly can play havoc.

You can change two settings if you wish to ensure that tests are consistent.

HOTS / MODULE DEFINITIONS / iWebs - TellMyFriends
Ensure that the default cache time is set to 0
HOST / HOST SETTINGS / PERFORMANCE SETTINGS
Set No Cache for Performance Settings and for Authenticated Cacheability

You can, and should leave the Compression on, unless your IIS server has been configured to Compressions on.

Additional Comments

The issue can be caused by cache playing with the repeat of access to the module. Because an end users is not likely to repeat hit the module, it should not be a problem at their end.

This indicates that you are trying to install the download package

This is NOT the package that should be installed to the DNN website. This is the package that contains the install package. Unzip (extract) the contents to a folder on your computer to find the package...

'name' PA.ZIP

e.g. Bulk Emailer 45.02.24 PA.ZIP

This is the file that is installed to the DNN Website.

I recently downloaded the Silverlight 1.1 SDK. I wanted to start reading the doc's which come in Compiled HTML Help files - you know those *.CHM files. I drag some out of the downloaded ZIP, confirm to Windows Vista that I really want to open this file, and nothing seems to work right in the details pane. Hmmm. What is this? Nope, nothing strange like the file being read only. But, I do notice this 'Unblock' button in the file properties.

So, I click this, re-open the CHM file, and bingo - the content now shows. What gives?

This is a security feature that has early roots in Windows XP SP2 and improved in Windows Vista. Basically, files downloaded from the Internet are untrusted sources - until I unblock them.

Procedure

Background

Interactivewebs modules require a license to be purchase and activated for each domain that they are accessed on.

Initially the modules run in a trial mode when they are first hit on a new domain. While in the trial mode, the module will function fully and only display the activation notification to administrators. Once the trial mode is finished, the module functionality will cease until a valid license purchase is matched or an activation key entered.

To activate your module,

You must first purchase a license. Licenses can be purchased by clicking the Buy Now Button

Once you have made your purchase, you are ready to Activate the Module

1. Click on the Request Activation Key

2. Select the location that you purchased the module license from.

3. Enter the email address you used when making this purchase

4. Click on Submit

Our activation system will attempt automatic license pickup and activation at this point. If we are able to match your purchase details, email address and license that you purchase, then our license server will send you a successful Activation email.

If you receive this message. You are done! Refresh the page by clicking on the page tab or refresh button in your browser, and the module activation system will be removed. It appears that when you install any Microsoft Small Business products (including Small Business Accounting 2006 and Business Contact Manager), the OutlookSecureTempFolder key in the registry is changed from '..\Temp\...' to '...\Temporary Internet Files\...'.

So, go into the registry and change the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Outlook\Security registry key OutlookSecureTempFolder value from '...\Temporary Internet Files\...' to '...\Temp\...'.

Problem

I access my email via webmail, and the mailbox was reporting as full. Now I deleted items it still shows as full and is rejecting email messages.

Solution

When you delete items from Webmail inbox, the move to the webmail deleted items. The limit on your webmail account is a total of all your folders.

You need to ensure that you delete old messages from any of these locations, then ensure that the deleted items are also empty. (You can set this to happen automatically in the Options)

After doing this process, you then need to wait for the server to perform maintenance. This happens every few hours.

If you are finding this limiting, you can request that your mailbox is increased for a small additional monthly charge.

Remember though that your web page, width of the site and container will effect this.

DNN SMTP Settings

DNN Websites have the ability to configure in the host settings an SMTP server. When a DNN email is generated from the DNN website, it will attempt to send mail through this SMTP server.

In order that your DNN website can successfully send the email, the SMTP server must allow the email message to be received. Typically this is done in one of four ways.

The SMTP server is configured for Open Relay (This should NEVER be done unless you have an external firewall blocking all external SMTP connections. Otherwise your mail server will become a spam server within hours)
SMTP Authentication – Typically SMTP servers are configured to allow users with a valid username and password to authenticate themselves. Once they have been authenticated, they can communicate email messages through the SMTP server. This is the same way most ISP’s work their mail servers. The idea is that only users who are customers of the ISP will allow email to be sent from their SMTP servers.
Selective Open Relay. The administrator of the SMTP server can also allow Open Relay (same as 1 above) from selective IP addresses. Any communication from an IP address that is configured to allow open relay will be accepted by the SMTP server.
Local Host – If your website has it’s own SMTP server configured, typically it will allow email message to be sent form it’s self.

To correctly configure your DNN SMTP settings, you need to understand what method of communication has been configured in the SMTP server you are trying to set DNN to access.

Here is the process you would configure from above.

Enter the IP address or valid domain name for the SMTP server, nothing more to do if open relay is allowed. (Still not recommended)
Enter the IP address or valid domain name for the SMTP server, and the valid user name and password as would be used to communicate with the SMTP server. This is where you get to use the user name and password setting in DNN.
Ensure that the SMTP administrator has allowed the IP address your DNN website uses to have open relay status. Then just enter the IP address or domain name of the SMTP server in your DNN host settings.
Configure your DNN host settings to have “localhost” in the DNN SMTP server settings are.

Problems.

There can be some issues that get confusing with the different methods.

Open relay mail servers will be attacked by spammers very quickly. They are always on the lookout for mail servers that they can abuse. It is never recommended to have your mail server on the internet and in open relay. Additionally your mail server will be blacklisted by other mail servers if found to be in open relay.

SMTP Authentication can still be restricted to certain IP addresses. Many ISP’s will allow you only to use their mail servers while you are a client of their AND connecting to their mail server from an IP address they own. So thing will work in your Email applications while you are connecting to the internet via their dialup or high speed connection, but as soon as you move away from a connection provided by them, you will not be allows to connect to their servers, let alone Authenticate.

Even if your ISP has allowed relay from the address that your mail server is run form, there may be a firewall or block on the normal port that the SMTP servers are typically configured to use. Port 25. If a firewall exists between your web server and the mail server, it must be configured to allow traffic over port 25.

You may have web server configured with an SMTP server on the same system. Yet have it be blocked over port 25 for outbound communications. Some ISP’s block port 25 to curb the flow of virus email messages. You need to be sure that your ISP that provides connection to the internet for your web and SMTP server is not blocking port 25.

How to get really confused.

Often mail servers will allow you to send email messages to email addresses on that SMTP server, even though they do not allow you to send mail out. So if you have a web application configured to send email to yourself, and the SMTP settings you use in the DNN host settings are for the SMTP server that runs the same email address you will have success.
Yet when you change the email address in the web application, you can no longer send email, and the web application appears to fail. This is still an SMTP configuration error on your website. You will need to find a method above to solve the issue.

The problem was to do with the IPv6 that is loaded with Windows 2008 server. The solution...

Client Print Fails to Load After Microsoft Update 956391

A number of people have reported problems using the ActiveX print control in the report viewer after installing Microsoft Update 956391. Specifically, users receive the error 'Unable to load client print control' when clicking on the print icon in the report viewer toolbar. I would like to explain what is happening, why we did it, and how to fix the problems that you or your customers are experiencing.

What’s a Kill Bit?

Let’s start with what Microsoft Update 956391 actually does. This update includes a kill bit for the ActiveX client print control used by Reporting Services. This print control is distributed with a number of components, including SQL Server 2000, SQL Server 2005, and Visual Studio 2008. A kill bit is an instruction to Internet Explorer to prevent it from loading an ActiveX control. In this case, Internet Explorer has been told not to load the Reporting Services client print control. As a result, when attempting to do so, the report viewer fails and displays the 'unable to load' error.

Setting the kill bit is typically done only in extreme cases, such as security vulnerabilities. That’s what happened in this case. The security vulnerability is not actually in the print control itself, but rather the GDI+ DLL that we ship with the print control. The details of that vulnerability are described in MS08-052. Even though we have patched the vulnerability, the kill bit is a defense in depth option to prevent malicious users from sending the Microsoft signed client print control and then exploiting the vulnerability. The kill bit prevents the client print control from loading regardless of where it comes from.

Which Client Print Controls are Affected?

The client print controls that shipped with SQL Server 2000, SQL Server 2005, Visual Studio 2008, and the Report Viewer 2008 redistributable all use the same CLSID and are therefore all disabled by the update. The table below shows the different CLSIDs that are used by the different versions of Reporting Services:

The previously shipped versions (using the first CLSID in the table) have been updated with a new version of GDI+ and a new CLSID to allow IE to load the control. If you are using Report Server 2000, Report Server 2005, or the web control from VS 2008 in local mode, you will need to download an update so that your servers distribute the new print control.

Notice that SQL Server 2008 is not affected by this update and uses a different CLSID. The print control that ships with SQL Server 2008 does not include the GDI+ DLL. This DLL was included in earlier versions due to the requirement that they work on Windows 98 and Windows 2000. But with that requirement dropped from SQL Server 2008, we no longer need to ship GDI+. The new CLSID for SQL Server 2008 prevents Internet Explorer from replacing a working client print control on Windows 98 or 2000 with the newer version that does not work on that operating system.

Which Report Viewers are Affected?

Now that we’ve established which print controls are affected, we also need to talk about the report viewer control itself. Even though the ReportViewer control in Visual Studio 2005 does not ship a print control, it still needs to be updated. To understand why, let’s take a look at the HTML that is sent to the browser when you click on the print button:

The object tag specifically references the disabled CLSID. Even though an updated report server will return a new client print control, the ReportViewer web control still generates the old CLSID. In hindsight, it would have been better for the Report Server to expose the CLSID for its client print control and for the ReportViewer ASP.Net control to use that when generating its HTML. But those products have already shipped. So we have also updated all versions of the ReportViewer (including the ReportViewer Web Part for use in SharePoint integrated mode) to write out the new CLSID.

We also support using the client print control directly in your application without a ReportViewer control. If you do that, you will need to update it to write out the new CLSID as well.

What do you need to download?

To get to a working state, you will need to do the following:

Update your report server to distribute the updated client print control.
Update your ReportViewer redistributable so that it references the new CLSID. The ReportViewer 2008 redistributable also includes an updated client print control for use in local mode.
Update Visual Studio. This is for the same reason as the redistributable. The ReportViewer is installed with Visual Studio for design time.
Update your Reporting Services SharePoint Add-In if you are using the report server in SharePoint integrated mode.

You install a Silverlight Module to asp.net or DNN website and receive an error that shows:

ErrorCode: 2104

ErrorType:InitializeError

Message: 2104 An error has occurred

Solution

This error is advising that the IIS host server is not correctly configured for Microsoft Silverlight. The fix is easy, and something that a host service should be happy to do for you. This is because Microsoft Silverlight is becoming more popular, and no Silverlight applications will run unless the following changes are made. Deploying Silverlight content to a production web server is a pretty easy process. Despite occasional misconception, Silverlight doesn't require a Microsoft-based web server: Apache can host up Silverlight content just as happily as IIS.

But there's one little gotcha: web servers are typically configured to only serve up a limited set of known file extensions as static content. That's all well and good, but Silverlight introduces two new file extensions (.xaml for loose XAML files and .xap for the zip-based binary packaging format). As a result, you need to add the MIME types for those file extensions to your web server so that it recognizes Silverlight content appropriately. Here are the MIME types you need to add to the server configuration:

That's all you have to do. Unfortunately, it's not possible to provide generic instructions for how to add MIME types, as it varies from server to server, but here are some links for various common web servers:

While you're updating the list of MIME types served, you might want to also add the relevant types to your web server to support WPF and ClickOnce applications. Here are the additional items you'll need:

But what if you're hosting your Silverlight application on a shared hosting service and your hoster doesn't give you access to change these settings? The good news is that there are two options available to you. Obviously, you could take advantage of Silverlight Streaming, our free hosting service for up to 10GB of Silverlight content.

Alternatively, you can 'cheat' the web server by renaming the XAP file extension to a compatible MIME type. The XAP container is ZIP-based, so you can simply rename the output file from .xap to .zip and change the source param within the object tag contained in the HTML file to point to the new file location. Click on this hyperlink to see the technique in action - it's a plain HTML file that points to a ZIP file (containing the Silverlight content).

One last piece of good news: IIS 7, included in Windows Server 2008, already includes all the relevant MIME types for both WPF and Silverlight, including both .xap and .xaml extensions, so if you're using Windows Server 2008, you're all set. (The same applies to a clean install of Windows Vista SP1, although if you upgrade from the RTM to the SP1 release, your settings will remain unchanged until you uninstall and reinstall the IIS feature).

Answer

The module automatically removes duplications of email addresses. So if you are generating a list from a number of sources like imported lists that have duplications, the duplications are removed before the send is sent.

The message has not yet been submitted for delivery. For more information, see help.

If you look in the services for the email router, you will see it has stopped. Starting the email router, the service will start then stop.

Solution

Navigate to: C:\Program Files\Microsoft CRM Email\Service

Find the file: Microsoft.Crm.Tools.EmailAgent.SystemState.xml

Rename or delete the file. Then start the CRM Email Router Service.

When trying to create a new custom entity in CRM 4.0, you receive the error 'Invalid Argument' when saving.

Solution

In our case, this was because the System Customizer security role had been deleted. (Apparently not a good idea).

The solution is to restore the role. To do this...

Backup the Database.

Take an export of customizations from a new or virgin CRM deployment. Then using the import customizations tools in CRM, import the list of customizations from the package you just created.

Select the Systems Customizer Security Role from the list of imported customizations, and with ONLY that selected, click the Import Sleected Customizations button.

Once imported, we then went back to 'Customization\Customize Entities\ Highlighted them all and published. (not sure if this is needed, but goo idea anyway).

Problem

Dotnetnuke inline editor feature is set to disabled in the Admin / Settings / Usability menu, but the inline editor feature continues to function on the DNN portal.

Solution

We found this situation on a version of DNN that had been upgraded in the core all the way to DNN 4.9.2.

The solution was found by updating the Text / HTML module it's self from the older version that was part of the previously updated website to 4.8.1 of the Text HTML module it's self.

The process is as simple as downloading the Install version of the Text/HTML module form the DNN core site, and installing it in the HOST / Modules page as you would any other module.

The CRM Server records Event ID:

Exception: System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Timeout expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding.

The problem shows around every 30 seconds and is related to the running of the MSCRMSynchronous with the MS CRM Asynchronous service.

While this service is bogged down, the server performance is greatly reduced. All aspects of the web server are stalled.

Our environment is Windows 2008 and SQL 2008 but this is not limited to this environment.

Solution

I beleived most of us faced the problem where you can not change business unit of a user in CRM 4 or MSCRMSynchronous seems unabled to delete huge data. If you use CRM diagnostic tool to debug the request step by step, you will found it is cause by the timeout issue.

Default CRM4 application configure OLEDB timout as 30 seconds. We can modify the register in application server to extend the time. Refer the screen capture below:-

We just need to extend the OLEDBTimeout value and add a new DWORD key 'ExtendedTimeout' . You can create the 2 keys if does not exist. By right OLEDBTimeout is already inserted during installation.

Run >regedit
expand the tree to >HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MSCRM
Change the default value 30 on OLEDBTimeout to the seconds you prefer. (Modify by Decimal)
Next, right click MSCRM, NEW DWORD rename to 'ExtendedTimeout'. (Modify the Decimal value to 1000000)
Important: in Decimal value do not type value larger than 2,147,483,647
After you successful run those 'resources hungry' tasks, set back to original value. Delte those key that previously does not exist.

Solution

The problem is caused by a file that is included in the package that requires 32 bit Application Pool.

To Enable this in Windows 2008 Server 64 Bit is very easy.

Login to IIS and locate the application pool associated with the site running Bulk Emailer.
Right Click on the Application Pool and select Advanced Settings
Second Option down the list is 'Enable 32-Bit Applications' Set this to True. - Then OK

A Restart of IIS should not be needed. Browse to the site and the site should load fine.

Solution

When the Outlook Sync Module is installed, it will make a change to the web.config file by adding:

When you uninstall the module, it will not be able to remove the entry to the web.config. You can fix your crashed website by manually removing the entry in the web.config file:

When you covert a MS word document to Adobe PDF you find that the end result has hyperliks that do not function.

Solution

There are two ways to convert .DOC files to PDF: You can either print to the 'Adobe PDF' printer, or you can use the PDFMaker macro (the PDF button on Word's toolbar). When you use the print route, everything is converted to PostScript by the printer driver. A printer does of course not know anything about links, so the links are lost. When you use the PDFMaker, you will also use the PostScript driver in the first step, but in a second step the so created PostScript is 'enhanced' by so called pdfmark commands that can represent links in a PostScript file. Distiller will convert these commands then in the last step to links in the PDF file.

So, depending on which way you chose to convert your file to PDF, you either end up with the links or not.

The right-click>'Convert to PDF' on the actual file in Explorer will also create links if you configured it to do so: In Acrobat select Edit>Preferences>Convert to PDF. Then select 'MS Office' and hit the settings button. There is a checkbox for links on the dialog that comes up.

Using cmd and command prompt: netstat -ano> c\temp.txt

To find what process is using prot 80 or 443.

You find it is wspsrv.exe and this is part of ISA server (in our case isa 2004)

Solution

Open Services, and stop: Microsoft Firewall - You will not loose remote control of the server doing this. ( I thought you would).

Then start the IIS website or sites.

Then restart the Microsoft Firewall services.

Additional Comments

It appears that sometimes the ISA firewall grabs resources before IIS does. This prevents sites from starting.

This is intended for people who have inadvertantly installed our uninstall package: HTML_04.08.03a_Source_restore

This will show a version number in the Host / Module Definitions / Text / HTML of 04.08.03

This procedure is not intended for DNN 5.1.0 and above (as this has a new Text module). A New seperate version of our module is available for DNN 5.1.0 and above.

Procedure

Login as HOST

Select HOTS / SQL

Paste the script below into the text box.

update {objectQualifier}desktopmodules set version = '04.08.01' where friendlyname = 'Text/HTML'

Check the 'Run as Script' box.

Click Execute

Navigate to HOST / Module Definitions

Check the version number of the Text HTML menu is now 04.08.01.

If it is, reinstall our package: HTML 04.08.02 PA via the normal module install method.

Additional Comments

The setup and installation of this module is essentially the same as any other DotNetNuke module. However there are a couple of precautions that should be treated with extreme caution!

This module overrides the existing text HTML module of your DotNetNuke website. In order to ensure stability and the ability to restore to the default module, we have packaged this module in a somewhat unusual method. Included in the download files are two separate modules.

· HTML 04.08.02g PA.zip - installs the additional two features of editing in word and version control.

· HTML_04.08.03a_Source_restore.zip - restores your DotNetNuke to the original version of the text HTML module.

Warning - never ever under any circumstances uninstall the text HTML module! You will lose your entire text HTML content of your website. If you don't like our module and don't wish to use it simply install HTML_04.08.03a_Source_restore.zip - to revert back to the original text HTML module.

Problem

The DNN Word Editor fails to load when MS Word loads. If the MS Word Addins are explored, you find that the ADDN for DNN Word Editor is not ticked, and ticking the check box fails to reload the application when word starts.

Solution

Force an update to DNN Word Editor.

To do this, you navigate to the DNN Word Editor launce menu from within the Text / HTML menu / Edit in Word, and select 'Downlaod Word Addin

This will force the new updated version of the software to be loaded.

It should be noted that this is not normally necessary, as the software updates are automatic via Microsoft Click Once technology. However because the error mentioned above is causing the software not to load, the auto update will not run.

Additional Comments

This is caused by a combination of software and updates. The error message is hidden by Word, so the module appears not to even try to load.

Bulk emailer shows an error that looks like this:

Solution

This problem is unfortunately caused by a release that had an issue with some SQL scripts. There are two solutions.

Easy (only do if you do not have data in your module you need)

1. Downlaod the Latest Bulk Emailer from our website. http://www.interactivewebs.com. Ensure it is version 45.05.33 or later.

2. Uninstall the Bulke Emailer module from DNN. Note that you will loose any data in the this module.

3. Install the later version of the Bulk Emailer. This will resolve the issues.

Advanced (if you have data you need)

1. This problem.

2. Host access to your dnn website.

We will then manually run some SQL scripts to resolve this issue, and update to .33 or later.

Additional Comments

This issue is ony valid for people running Bulk Emailer under very specific SQL setup, and should not be an issue for the majority of DNN users.

Telnet Client allows a computer to connect to a remote Telnet server and run applications on that server. Once logged on, a user is given a command prompt that can be used as if it had been opened locally on the Telnet server's console. Commands that you type at the Telnet client command prompt are sent to the Telnet Server and executed there, as though you were locally logged on to a command prompt session at the server. Output from the commands that you run are sent back to the Telnet client where they are displayed for you to view.

If you are finding that RSS is feeding old data on your website. Chances are that your DNN search service that provides feeds to the RSS service is needing to be refreshed.

There are two methods to do this. The simple way and the sure fire way.

Procedure

Simple Way.

Login as HOST

Navigate to HOST / Search Admin

Click in the - Re-Index Content link.

Sure Fire Way

After DNN has indexed its portal(s), the indexed content is stored and remains until the module is deleted or is over-written when the content is re-indexed. Once something 'bad' has been indexed that DNN search system does not agree with, it will interfere with subsequest indexing operation and therefore the search results. You might see this problem as repeated errors in the log.

Another reason for resetting search is that once something has been indexed, it would stay in the database there after until deleted. Old indexed contents may not get deleted for a variety of reasons. One reason for example is when a module has been updated and implements a revised ISearchable interface. The updated module installer may not always delete indexed content from the older version.

To mannually clear the database before re-indexing, login as host, go to Host/SQL and execute the following query (copy/paste into the SQL text box):

         delete {databaseOwner}[{objectQualifier}SearchItemWordPosition]
         delete {databaseOwner}[{objectQualifier}SearchItemWord]
         delete {databaseOwner}[{objectQualifier}SearchWord]
         delete {databaseOwner}[{objectQualifier}SearchItem]

Or use the following queries in the order listed in Query Analyzer (subsitute your own database owner and object qualifier):

         delete dbo.SearchItemWordPosition
         delete dbo.SearchItemWord
         delete dbo.SearchWord
         delete dbo.SearchItem

It is safe to perform this procedure because the next re-indexing operation will repopulate these tables with the current content. On large systems, re-indexing operation may take a little more time to complete.

After using DNN word editor, the 'Publish Button' goes missing from Microsoft Word menu.

This is something that is not common, but is easy to fix. We suspect it is associated with a non-graceful shutdown of Microsoft Word.

Solution

In your operating system, navigate to the Add / Remove Programs area, and uninstall:

DNN Word Editor

Then navigate to the DNN Word editor on your website and select the 'Download Word Add in' button. This will install and configure a fresh version of the add in.

We are seeking information on this error. We have seen it a few times, but cannot identify the exact sequence of events that replicate the problem.

Problem

When you check the Bulk Emailer Campaign Status, you notice that the status shows 0% and looking at the details, you see that the email messages to a particular address show 'Not Sent'.

You are SURE that you have valid SMTP settings. (Invalid SMTP is the most common problem for email sending issues).

Solution

We have seen in a few instances where there is some scheduled process that is running in the DNN scheduler that is not ever finishing. This is usually associated with either a 'dodgy' module or an install that has gone bad.

Either way the solution is easy....

Log in to your website as a Host.

Go to: Host / Schedule

Deactivate any schedule process that could be interfering with this Bulk Emailer. You can do this one at a time to narrow down what process is in fault and not finishing.

After deactivating each process, you should go to: Host / Settings and restart the application to restart the scheduler.

Once you have identified the processes at fault, you can restart any others that you need. Either fixing or leaving deactivate the process at fault.

Additional Comments

The Bulk Emailer module for DtoNetNuke requires that the DNN Scheduler runs correctly. Naturally if the scheduler is broken, then our module will not run either.

This is a SMTP 550 error.

This indicates that you are trying to connect to an SMTP server that requires authentication (user name and password) to allow you to relay to external email addresses.

Don't get confused about testing to a mail account on this domain. i.e.

If you host your own domain on this server, you would be able to delive a test email to that domain, but the server is responding here saying that it is now trying to send to an external mail server and as yet you have not authenticated the connection for relay.

Solution

This is because there is a DLL in the Bulk Emailer that requires 32 Bit Support, and the support for 32 Bit has not been enabled.

The fix is easy.

2. Enable 32 Bit support in IIS 6.

1.	Open a command prompt and navigate to the %systemdrive%\Inetpub\AdminScripts directory.

Enabling 32 Bit does not pose any performance issues. This solution is recommended by Microsoft.

Manipulation of images in the Flash Slide program would be very complex were it not for the fact that the module sizes up and down with a width heigh proportional relationship. The following tips should help with this.

Answer

Using the flash slide module is easy. Here are a few tips to getting the best look out of the module.

Two types of images make up the module. Main Image and Thumb Image. The module was designed around a main image size of 725x340 and a thumb image size of 56 x 56.
Best results are achieved by starting with images this size.
The Default size the module displays on the install is 739 x 425. This includes the spaces around the images and boarders etc.
If you need to resize. Best results are achieved by working out the proportional size you need. For example. If you wanted to shrink things by 50%. Then.. using an image program, shrink your pictures by 50%. 725x340= 363x170 and 56x56=28x28. The graphics program will do this best. Then set the module settings down by 50% ie. 739x425 =369x213
We understand that sometimes you may want to distort and change the shape of the module. This is fine, and the module will adjust the images accordingly. However you must understand that the module cannot do anything above and beyond a graphics program. So if you start with original images with photos or text in the image, then they will look blurry if not changed in proportion to their original size and shape.
5. As a last resort. Set the module the size you need it on your site. Place one image and thumb in place. Screen captures the display and use a graphics program to cut up the capture and work out the size of the main and thumb image. Then reproduce originals in this new proportion to get a sharper display of photos and text.

Using the DotNetNuke Video Module - Silverlight Video Library

While the module is capable of playing any size video, the experience for people viewing the videos will depend on their internet bandwidth. This is why we suggest to make the videos a size that is at least reasonable to view on most internet connections.

Because the total size of the video will depend on the time lenght of the video in question, it is not possible to suggest a max size limit. However here are some suggestions.

Solution

A 1 Hour video (web quality) need not bee more than about 200 Mb. If you have high quality web video and run for an hour, you need not be more than 250-300 Mb.

Then using this as a guide, you can taunicate video total size around this. So if for example you have a 30 min video, a good size might be 100 Mb, and 15 min - 50 Mb etc.

Now this is a max size suggestion, and smaller is always better.

To reduce the size of your videos to something small and web friendly, we suggest a program called Prism Video Converter. http://www.nchsoftware.com/prism/index.html

It is free and works well.

Some things to consider when playing with the conversion settings are:

Mono not Stereo
Reduce display size
Reduce Frames per second

Apart from these basic suggestions, there is a world of information on google about video compression.

Error is caused by no default value had been set on the Admin tab >> Other Settings >> Default Language dropdown.

While logged in as Host account, I went t Admin Tab >> Languages.

We have seen in some DotNetNuke DNN websites that the scheduler is not able to complete schedules processes, and the failure is happening on the scheduled item

It is easy to see that this is the failure item because the schedule process lists the last completed date and time. In the cause of the failure, it lists an old date and time.

Solution

Our solution is to disable this process by clicking on the pencil next to the item, and unselecting the 'Schedule Enable' check box. Then click Update.

While the solution is not a fix for the cause of the failure in this module. We did not develop this module and suggest that people contact BizModules for a fix from them.

Any schedule process that does not complete may cause faulures in other prcesses, depening on the failure.

Solution

This error is displayed when invalid data is entered into the module settings for the Google Analytics Report Settings. In most cases the is due to the setting for the 'Web Profile ID' being filled with the 'Profile ID'.

In Google Analytics management section, they list two types of ID's. One they call the Profile ID, and looks something like this: 'Profile ID: 223485423'

The other is a Web Profile ID and looks something like this: 'http://www.domain.com UA-10755975-4'

For our module to pull data relating to a specific domain's data, we need the Web Profile ID' Number only entered in the module.

You would enter for example: UA-10755975-4 into our mdoule settings.

All the text are using default module skin css class called 'Normal' already. If the client knows how to write css, he can define a customized css in ViewBulkEmailOptIn.ascx and replace all CssClass='Normal' in ViewBulkEmailOptIn.ascx with the newly defined one.

Problem

When configuring the Advanced Login Module on a DNN 5+ website, and setting the page as the Login Page in the Admin settings of the site you receive the error:

You have been redirected to this default Login Page because the Login Page set for this website does not contain a valid DotNetNuke Account Login module, or the permissions have not been set correctly.

Solution

The cause of this is a safety feature of the DotNetNuke 5 system. It trys to ensure that you do not accidentally define a page as the login page of your site that does not have a login module on the page. This is to prevent you from being locked out of your own site.

It does cause a hickup with third party login modules for DotNetNuke like the Iwebs - Advanced Login Module.

The solution is easy.

1. Ensure you have DNN 05.01.01 or later. (upgrade if necessary)

2. Add to the page the DNN Login Module, and set the visability to Admin only.

Problem

When the recipient of an e-mail attempts to unsubscribe from your newsletters by clicking the URL you have included in the Email that references the unsubscribe system of the bulk Emailer.

The user is presented with an incorrect e-mail address and not the e-mail address that they receive the Email at.

Solution

The cause and solution to this problem are in fact very simple. The unsubscribe system of the DotNetNuke bulk e-mail module is intended to work with a token system. The token system will automatically reference the e-mail address of the person who received the message and when the URL is clicked that is in the message generated by a token, the user will automatically be unsubscribing with the e-mail address they received the message at.

If a URL is pasted into the Email instead of the token system, then this URL is automatically picked up by the automated link tracking system. This distorts the URL so that when the user clicks on it initially it appears to be valid that in fact is a jumbled mess of link tracking data.

The easy solution is to use the unsubscribe token in the following way:

Unsubscribe Token

The unsubscribe token is an additional “non profile data” token. When used in an email, it allows you to include a single link that recipients of your email can click on to unsubscribe from your future email messages. The token will create a custom URL that includes tracking information about the email address that particular email was sent to. Solution

This error is saying that it could not gain access to a single file called: chilkatdotnet2.dll that is found in the \bin directory.

If you delete that file the error will go away. But you will not be able to use our module, as it requires that file.

If you manage the server, then the fix is easy. it is one of two problems, and in this case it is because the server is setup with medium trust and this application requires full trust. As does DNN in general as it is recommended to be set to full trust.

Solution

This is caused with security in IIS. Mostly we have seen this with R2 of Windows 2008 Server. The solution is easy.

With Windows 2008 and Windows 7, the default account is no longer NETWORK SERVICE but Application Pool Identity so you need to see what the Application Pool in IIS for the website is running under. The problem is a permission issue.

Problem

We had a site with the Alive Media Player showing it’s flash video on a page over the top of our DotNetNuke Tell My Friend Module.

This is a typical error with flash when used on some browsers with Jquery. IE8 and the latest Firefox for example.

Solution

The solution is the set the flash layer into a transparent mode. In the Alive Module, they make this easy with a “Wmode” attribute setting.

Set it to transparent and you are good to go with InteractiveWebs Tell My Friend DotNetNuke Module.

Problem

We discovered a problem with DNN 05.00.01 and believe the problem is likely to be there in all the very early versions of DNN 5x. The issue relates to DNN not handling memory correctly. After a period of the Bulk Emailer running, IIS will reset on the DNN website. This should not be a big issue, but we have found is that the when the crash happens, the server will report with incorrect time dates to the Bulk Emailer module. This causes the send process to delay for a day, and in some cases to stop all together.

We looked at implementing a solution by reading data times stamps from the database server and not the IIS server, but after some careful consideration about possible implications…. We decided that we should not try to compensate for the Beta releases of DNN 5x with known memory problems, and instead say that the fix is to upgrade to a more recent DNN release.

Solution

Upgrade DNN to a more stable release than the early version of DNN 5x (at the time of writing this, we suggest DNN 05.04.00)

The memory exception error is talked about in many forums. It is a known DNN early 5x problem.

You find that after installing the DNN Flash Module, you can select .SWF files to run, but cannot make the module select .FLV files from your site.

Solution

Please be aware that these steps do not resolve any issue with Flash, but are a configuration step for Microsoft Windows 2003 and Microsoft IIS Server 6.0. Any difficulties in executing these instructions or any errors that may arise from modifying your system settings should be addressed to Microsoft. For more details, please refer to your IIS documentation.

On the Windows 2003 server, open the Internet Information Services Manager.
Expand the Local Computer Server.
Right-click the local computer server and select Properties.
Select the MIME Types tab.
Click New and enter the following information:
- Associated Extension box: .FLV

Click OK.

This problem can be caused by the incorrect use of the template system within the module. Try using the defaul template in place of incorrectly modified or invalid HTML custom code.

Solution

The solution is simple.

In the \bin directory on your DNN website is a file called: App_SubCode_HTMLService.dll

After backing up this file (just to be safe), then delete the file App_SubCode_HTMLService.dll from the website. This should fix the issue.

Additional Comments

Because the DNN upgrade to more recent DNN 5 versions also changed a compiled test/html editor from an un-compiled version. The file we are removing is a conflicting file that is left over from earlier versions.

Solution

This is caused by the user account that you are logged into the site with not having a valid email address. Update the email address of the that users account (usually an admin or host) and the module will not show this error.

Additional Comments

Often the setup of accounts like the host or Admin account are rushed and not correctly configured at the time the website was launched. This causes problems with this module as it will try to report the start and finish of Bulk Emailer jobs.

Pivot View displays "For security reasons DTD is prohibited in this XML document"

Problem

The home page of the browser will list previously visited Pivots in the history. These are unlikely to open after the URL Valid time has expired. The Pivot Browser will display a messages that says something like: “For security reasons DTD is prohibited in this XML document…”

Solution

To fix this you simply browse back to the Pivot Module and copy the URL again to generate a URL that has not expired.

Problem

When submitting a form with Feedback Designer, the module reports:

An error has occurred. Error: FeedbackDesigner is currently unavailable.

Solution

This is most oftern caused by incorrect settings in the DotNetNuke HOST/SMTP settings area.

The module uses these settings to relay the submitted form via your SMTP server to your email. If it cannot send the email due to a failure on the SMTP server or invalid settings, then it will report the failure.

Problem

When you create a relationship between your website and Outlook, and then modify a contact in outlook, the data is not synchronised back to your website.

Solution

Check if you are using antivirus programs that could be blocking communications to your website. Most advanced antivirus solutions try to block this type of communications, but programs such as NOD32 will allow you to specify an allowed domain to communicate with. Ensure that your website is entered as 'Allowed'.

Additional Comments

Just about every recent type of antivirus application will allow you to exclude some domains from being blocked. Check with the AV program creator for exactly how to achieve this.

Problem

After updating form earlier version of DNN to Mid DNN 5x, like DNN 5.5.1 or DNN 5.6.0, your Outlook Sync module stop syncing with Outlook.

Throwing: Error Task ‘SharePoint’ reported error 0×80040102 Outlook cannot connect to the SharePoint List

Solution

This is caused by an apparent bug in the URLRewriter component of DotNetNuke. The solution is easy and there are two.

We found that when testing the install of the module on a new DNN 5.6.0 website, that a portal alias was automatically added to the primary portal that included this path. i.e.

domain.com/_vti_bin/lists.asmx

www.domain.com/_vti_bin/lists.asmx

This turned out to be the solution for our site too. By adding the alias to the Admin / Other Settings / Portal Aliases – list of alias addresses.

This then allowed the web url /_vti_bin/lists.asmx to be hit and return the default page for this url:

After providing this, the errors were all gone, and the Outlook Sync module worked again!

It turns out that there is a better solution

Because the error is actually caused by some bugs in the URL rewriter in DNN. In the Web.config. There is a reference to the URL rewriter. It is responsible for generating the error above.

This line is found in the web.config under the system.webserver section of the config file.

We have a line relating to the outlook sync

If you ensure that the outlook sync line appears before the URLReweite line in the web.config. Then this will fix the error too, and make it not necessary to use the alias.

We believe this is a bug in the later version of the DNN URLRewriter.

Solution

1. Login to your DotNetNuke website as a host.

2. Navigate to the HOST / Host Settings page - Other Settings

3. Add ',mht,mhtml' (without the '') into the Allowable File Extensions.

4. Click Update and you are done.

DotNetNuke only allows certain file types to be uploaded by default. You need to allow DNN to accept the Microsoft MHT or MHTML file type if you plan on using it with Bulk Emailer.

Problem

When you try to send e-mail from an internet connection like Telstra Wireless Broadband you find that email messages will not send.

This is caused by Telstra or another ISP blocking the normal e-mail sending port 25 or 465. They do this to avoid email spam viruses abusing their network.

Solution

Change the outgoing STMP server settings to use port: 587 in place of 25 or 465. This will work specifically for mail.interactivewebs.com SmarterMail e-mail servers.

Port 587 should also allow SSL as an option on this port.

Understanding Activation

InteractiveWebs DotNetNuke Modules require a license to be activates on each sub domain from which the module is accessed.

The license is per sub domain, and NOT for each instance of DotNetNuke.

A sub domain example is:

www.domain.com
dev1.domain.com
domain.com

In the case of domain.com and www.domain.com, these are considered as one single license. EVERY other sub domain needs it’s own license.

If you activate a module on dev.domain.com then browse to the same module using another sub domain (like dev2.domain.com) the module will not be activate with the new sub domain in the browser URL.

Trial

Each module will automatically enter into a 100% functional TRIAL mode the first time you access the module with any particular sub domain.

The trial period is automatically set from the date you first visit the module with any particular sub domain.

Example

If you access dev1.domain.com the module will start it’s trial period from today, and may expire if you don’t activate.

If you then use another sub domain like dev2.domain.com the module will start a new trial and you will continue to be able to access the module on that dev2.domain.com sub domain.

Note: All the settings and modifications you make to any module in trial WILL be preserved and waiting for you once you activate the module license. So if your trial expires on your development sub domain, you can simply activate the module in it’s final www.domain.com location when you are ready to go live.

Before You Activate

We recommend that if you need to configure and test (development site) before going live, that you do that on a development sub domain (like dev.domain.com), IN TRIAL MODE.

From that dev.domain.com, Setup the module, test and be sure things are working. Don’t be concerned if you get things just right, and the trial time expires. Because as soon as you access the module page on a new sub domain, it will go back into trial, and be available fro activation.

All your module settings and customizations will carry over to the new sub domain when you access it. So in this example, if you are ready to go live with www.domain.com you can access the module page with that sub domain, and extend the trial, or activate the module.

For this reason we always suggest that you only activate your module on www.domain.com as your final public URL of your website.

Solution

One of the most common problems experienced by users of hosted email services is that they find they can only send email messages to their own domain.

For Example, if you have two hosted email addresses:

You find that you can successfully send an email message from one user to another, but when you try to send to any other domain:

You find that the email messages do not send.

Solution

You need to enable “Authentication” in your configured email account settings. There are many client email programs, probably the most common is Outlook.

When you configure an new POP3 email account you normally end up with something that looks like this:

If you click on More Settings / Outgoing Server

and just tick the option to use the same settings as the incoming mail server.

This is all that is needed to enable outbound SMTP authentication.

Background

SMTP Servers (or email servers) are setup to need stop people using them for sending email messages. As strange as that sounds, if they were not setup this way, then anyone could SPAM the world using that email server.

To prevent users from abusing an Open Relay Mail Server, the administrators say that anyone wanting to send email messages from that server to any other server, will need a users name and pass. Almost always this is the same user and pass as the one needed to download your mail from that server.

This this need for user and pass is referred to as “Authentication” and is necessary on almost all servers, other than internet service providers who give you an internet connection. In that instance they authenticate you from your internet connection.

Why Can You Send to Your Own Domain?

Because Email Servers by nature will received email messages to addresses they host. This is part of the process necessary for email messages to be sent and received.

When you enable the default settings in DotNetNuke 6x with Advanced Login Module Popup Mode, the popup fails to work off the Login and Register buttons.

Solution

Advanced Login module for DotNetNuke works with DotNetNuke 4x, 5x and now 6x.

However because DotNetNuke 6x has some popup effect by default with the login button it interferes with the Advanced Login Module popup mode.

Solution

To fix this issue, the solution is relatively easy.

After selecting “Popup' from the Advanced Login Basic Settings Edit the skin object login and register as follows.

When you send out an Email Message from DotNetNuke using iWebs Advanced Login Module, you find that links in the email message received do not work.

Solution

If you are using the Advanced Email Module for DotNeTNuke, called bulk emailer, and you find that the links you place in your emails are not working when they arrive as an email. Then the fix is simple.

In the Bulk Emailer Settings Menu

Click on the option to Update Link

This will force the module to operate on the URL that you are currently working with on the site. It is necessary when you install the module in a dev URL and then try to operate through another URL such as a final domain name url.

The help for the item reads:

If you change the domain name that this module is operating on, then you should click ‘Update Links’ to reset the base URL for Email Tracking, Unsubscription and View Online.

To create a good looking email message that will display well on all email clients will require some adherence to the following guidelines. We suggest you read them carefully and test thoroughly.

Procedure

At some stage in your career, it’s likely you’ll be asked by a client to design a HTML email. Before you rush to explain that all the cool kids are using social media, keep in mind that when done correctly, email is still one of the best ways to promote you and your clients online. In fact, a recent survey showed that every dollar spent on email marketing this year generated more than $40 in return. That’s more than any other marketing channel, including the cool ones.

There are a whole host of ingredients that contribute to a good email marketing campaign. Permission, relevance, timeliness and engaging content are all important. Even so, the biggest challenge for designers still remains building an email that renders well across all the popular email clients.

Same same, but different

Before getting into the details, there are some uncomfortable facts that those new to HTML email should be aware of. Building an email is not like building for the web. While web browsers continue their onward march towards standards, many email clients have stubbornly stayed put. Some have even gone backwards. In 2007, Microsoft switched the Outlook rendering engine from Internet Explorer to Word. Yes, as in the word processor. Add to this the quirks of the major web-based email clients like Gmail and Hotmail, sprinkle in a little Lotus Notes and you’ll soon realize how different the email game is.

While it’s not without its challenges, rest assured it can be done. In my experience the key is to focus on three things. First, you should keep it simple. The more complex your email design, the more likely is it to choke on one of the popular clients with poor standards support. Second, you need to take your coding skills back a good decade. That often means nesting tables, bringing CSS inline and following the coding guidelines I’ll outline below. Finally, you need to test your designs regularly. Just because a template looks nice in Hotmail now, doesn’t mean it will next week.

Setting your lowest common denominator

To maintain your sanity, it’s a good idea to decide exactly which email clients you plan on supporting when building aHTML email. While general research is helpful, the email clients your subscribers are using can vary significantly from list to list. If you have the time there are a number of tools that can tell you specifically which email clients your subscribers are using. Trust me, if the testing shows almost none of them are using a client like Lotus Notes, save yourself some frustration and ignore it altogether.

Knowing which email clients you’re targeting not only makes the building process easier, it can save you lots of time in the testing phase too. For the purpose of this article, I’ll be sharing techniques that give the best results across all of the popular clients, including the notorious ones like Gmail, Lotus Notes 6 and Outlook 2007. Just remember that pixel perfection in all email clients is a pipe dream.

Let’s get started.

Use tables for layout

Because clients like Gmail and Outlook 2007 have poor support for float, margin and padding, you’ll need to use tables as the framework of your email. While nested tables are widely supported, consistent treatment of width, marginand padding within table cells is not. For the best results, keep the following in mind when coding your table structure.

Set the width in each cell, not the table

When you combine table widths, td widths, td padding and CSS padding into an email, the final result is different in almost every email client. The most reliable way to set the width of your table is to set a width for each cell, not for the table itself.

Never assume that if you don’t specify a cell width the email client will figure it out. It won’t. Also avoid using percentage based widths. Clients like Outlook 2007 don’t respect them, especially for nested tables. Stick to pixels. If you want to add padding to each cell, use either the cellpadding attribute of the table or CSS padding for each cell, but never combine the two.

Err toward nesting

Table nesting is far more reliable than setting left and right margins or padding for table cells. If you can achieve the same effect by table nesting, that will always give you the best result across the buggier email clients.

Use a container table for body background colors

Many email clients ignore background colors specified in your CSS or the <body> tag. To work around this, wrap your entire email with a 100% width table and give that a background color.

You can use the same approach for background images too. Just remember that some email clients don’t support them, so always provide a fallback color.

Avoid unnecessary whitespace in table cells

Where possible, avoid whitespace between your <td> tags. Some email clients (ahem, Yahoo! and Hotmail) can add additional padding above or below the cell contents in some scenarios, breaking your design for no apparent reason.

CSS and general font formatting

While some email designers do their best to avoid CSS altogether and rely on the dreaded <font> tag, the truth is manyCSS properties are well supported by most email clients. See this comprehensive list of CSS support across the major clients for a good idea of the safe properties and those that should be avoided.

Always move your CSS inline

Gmail is the culprit for this one. By stripping the CSS from the <head> and <body> of any email, we’re left with no choice but to move all CSS inline. The good news is this is something you can almost completely automate. Free services like Premailer will move all CSS inline with the click of a button. I recommend leaving this step to the end of your build process so you can utilize all the benefits of CSS.

Avoid shorthand for fonts and hex notation

A number of email clients reject CSS shorthand for the font property. For example, never set your font styles like this.

   font:bold 1em/1.2em georgia,times,serif;
}

Instead, declare the properties individually like this.

p {
   font-weight: bold;
   font-size: 1em;
   line-height: 1.2em;
   font-family: georgia,times,serif;
}

While we’re on the topic of fonts, I recently tested every conceivable variation of @font-face across the major email clients. The results were dismal, so unfortunately it’s web-safe fonts in email for the foreseeable future.

When declaring the color property in your CSS, some email clients don’t support shorthand hexadecimal colors likecolor:#f60; instead of color:#ff6600;. Stick to the longhand approach for the best results.

Paragraphs

Just like table cell spacing, paragraph spacing can be tricky to get a consistent result across the board. I’ve seen many designers revert to using double <br /> or DIVs with inline CSS margins to work around these shortfalls, but recent testing showed that paragraph support is now reliable enough to use in most cases (there was a time when Yahoo! didn’t support the paragraph tag at all).

The best approach is to set the margin inline via CSS for every paragraph in your email, like so:

Again, do this via CSS in the head when building your email, then use Premailer to bring it inline for each paragraph later.

If part of your design is height-sensitive and calls for pixel perfection, I recommend avoiding paragraphs altogether and setting the text formatting inline in the table cell. You might need to use table nesting or cellpadding / CSS to get the desired result. Here’s an example:

Links

Some email clients will overwrite your link colors with their defaults, and you can avoid this by taking two steps. First, set a default color for each link inline like so:

Next, add a redundant span inside the a tag.

To some this may be overkill, but if link color is important to your design then a superfluous span is the best way to achieve consistency.

Images in HTML emails

The most important thing to remember about images in email is that they won’t be visible by default for many subscribers. If you start your design with that assumption, it forces you to keep things simple and ensure no important content is suppressed by image blocking.

With this in mind, here are the essentials to remember when using images in HTML email:

Avoid spacer images

While the combination of spacer images and nested tables was popular on the web ten years ago, image blocking in many email clients has ruled it out as a reliable technique today. Most clients replace images with an empty placeholder in the same dimensions, others strip the image altogether. Given image blocking is on by default in most email clients, this can lead to a poor first impression for many of your subscribers. Stick to fixed cell widths to keep your formatting in place with or without images.

Always include the dimensions of your image

If you forget to set the dimensions for each image, a number of clients will invent their own sizes when images are blocked and break your layout. Also, ensure that any images are correctly sized before adding them to your email. Some email clients will ignore the dimensions specified in code and rely on the true dimensions of your image.

Avoid PNGs

Lotus Notes 6 and 7 don’t support 8-bit or 24-bit PNG images, so stick with the GIF or JPG formats for all images, even if it means some additional file size.

Provide fallback colors for background images

Outlook 2007 has no support for background images (aside from this hack to get full page background images working). If you want to use a background image in your design, always provide a background color the email client can fall back on. This solves both the image blocking and Outlook 2007 problem simultaneously.

Don’t forget `alt` text

Lack of standards support means email clients have long destroyed the chances of a semantic and accessible HTMLemail. Even still, providing alt text is important from an image blocking perspective. Even with images suppressed by default, many email clients will display the provided alt text instead. Just remember that some email clients like Outlook 2007, Hotmail and Apple Mail don’t support alt text at all when images are blocked.

Use the display hack for Hotmail

For some inexplicable reason, Windows Live Hotmail adds a few pixels of additional padding below images. A workaround is to set the display property like so.

This removes the padding in Hotmail and still gives you the predicable result in other email clients.

Don’t use floats

Both Outlook 2007 and earlier versions of Notes offer no support for the float property. Instead, use the align attribute of the img tag to float images in your email.

If you’re seeing strange image behavior in Yahoo! Mail, adding align=“top” to your images can often solve this problem.

Video in email

With no support for JavaScript or the object tag, video in email (if you can call it that) has long been limited to animated gifs. However, some recent research I did into the HTML5 video tag in email showed some promising results.

Turns out HTML5 video does work in many email clients right now, including Apple Mail, Entourage 2008, MobileMe and the iPhone. The real benefit of this approach is that if the video isn’t supported, you can provide reliable fallback content such as an animated GIF or a clickable image linking to the video in the browser.

Of course, the question of whether you should add video to email is another issue altogether. If you lean toward the “yes” side check out the technique with code samples.

What about mobile email?

The mobile email landscape was a huge mess until recently. With the advent of the iPhone, Android and big improvements from Palm and RIM, it’s becoming less important to think of mobile as a different email platform altogether.

That said, there are a few key pointers to keep in mind when coding your emails to get a decent result for your more mobile subscribers.

Keep the width less than 600 pixels

Because of email client preview panes, this rule was important long before mobile email clients came of age. In truth, the iPhone and Pre have a viewport of 320 pixels, the Droid 480 pixels and the Blackberry models hover around 360 pixels. Sticking to a maximum of 600 pixels wide ensures your design should still be readable when scaled down for each device. This width also gives good results in desktop and web-based preview panes.

Be aware of automatic text resizing

In what is almost always a good feature, email clients using webkit (such as the iPhone, Pre and Android) can automatically adjust font sizes to increase readability. If testing shows this feature is doing more harm than good to your design, you can always disable it with the following CSS rule:

-webkit-text-size-adjust: none;

Don’t forget to test

While standards support in email clients hasn’t made much progress in the last few years, there has been continual change (for better or worse) in some email clients. Web-based providers like Yahoo!, Hotmail and Gmail are notorious for this. On countless occasions I’ve seen a proven design suddenly stop working without explanation.

For this reason alone it’s important to retest your email designs on a regular basis. I find a quick test every month or so does the trick, especially in the web-based clients. The good news is that after designing and testing a few HTML email campaigns, you will find that order will emerge from the chaos. Many of these pitfalls will become quite predictable and your inbox-friendly designs will take shape with them in mind.

Looking ahead

Designing HTML email can be a tough pill for new designers and standardistas to swallow, especially given the fickle and retrospective nature of email clients today. With HTML5 just around the corner we are entering a new, uncertain phase. Will email client developers take the opportunity to repent on past mistakes and bring email clients into the present? The aim of groups such as the Email Standards Project is to make much of the above advice as redundant as the long-forgotten <blink> and <marquee> tags, however, only time will tell if this is to become a reality.

Although not the most compliant (or fashionable) medium, the results speak for themselves – email is, and will continue to be one of the most successful and targeted marketing channels available to you. As a designer with HTML email design skills in your arsenal, you have the opportunity to not only broaden your service offering, but gain a unique appreciation of how vital standards are.

A purchase at SnowCovered has not generated a license on our license server. As a result you are unable to activate your module.

Solution

SnowCoverd sales are a little particular. The sale does not complete until the download package has been download from the SnowCovered website.

In the case of InteractiveWebs modules sold on Snowcovered. The download package is only a .zip file containing instructions, and if you are a returning customer you may feel that you know this and have decided not to bother downloading the .zip package.

Unfortunately the sale is not complete until you do, and your license is not generated until the sale is complete. (The license is automatically generated at our end when the SnowCovered store advises of the sale.)

The solution in these circumstances is to ensure you download the module package form the SnowCovered site.

With CRM 4.0 and Microsoft CRM 2011 there is a default limit for the number items that can be retrieved when making various types of web service calls into the CRM.

Typically this limit is set to 5000 but with some types of calls it will return 7000. In any case, the process to remove the limit and set it to 20,000 is very easy.

Procedure

On the server running CRM

Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then click OK.
Locate and then select the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\MSCRM
On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
Type TurnOffFetchThrottling, and then press ENTER.
Right-click TurnOffFetchThrottling, and then click Modify.
Type a number other than 0 in the Value data box, and then click OK.

Note Step 6 lets you retrieve the number of records specified in the Count attribute of your fetch statement.
On the File menu, click Exit.

Microsoft CRM 2011 allows XRM services that use application/soap+xml content type.

When you install Microsoft CRM 2011 in an IFD / hosted environment, it is smart enough to automatically configure IIS gzip compression on the website.

What it does not do, is configure the

C:\Windows\System32\Inetsrv\Config\applicationHost.config

file to compress XRM calls out of the CRM database.

In a test we were performing for an update to our Microsoft CRM 2011 Portal technology, we found that retrieving a list of around 20,000 items returned a 19 MB data package without gzip dynamic compression. Not huge but pretty big! What amazed us was that after enabling dynamic compression on the XRM data, this reduced from 19 MB to 890 KB, a huge performance improvement!

We also noticed that the Microsoft Hosted CRM 2011 service already has this compression enabled, so we figured if it is good enough for them, then we should give it a shot.

Procedure

How to Enable XRM gzip Compression in IIS

Navigate to: C:\Windows\System32\Inetsrv\Config\applicationHost.config

and open it in your favourite editor.

Search for the Section: “<httpCompression directory=”

And in that section you will probably find an entry that looks like this:

Below that, add the following:

<add mimeType='application/soap+xml' enabled='true' />

So the file looks like this:

Note: We are making the assumption that you are on Windows 2008, and that CRM 2011 was successfully installed, and that this in turn enabled IIS compression on the Microsoft CRM website.

These steps should massively improve data access to CRM using XRM calls.

Port Blocking by ISPs such as Telstra

Some ISPs block port 25 (mail sending) from their connections as a way of helping to stop spam viruses from blasting mail out on their networks. If you find you can send a test message to yourself, but not to an external address, chances are that you have port 25 blocked. In the advanced settings of your POP3 mail connection, you can change the outgoing port from 25 to 587. Alternatively you can set the connection to use SSL or TLS security, this should automatically set the port to 587.

Delay on Receiving Messages

This email service uses a system known as grey listing. The service helps to combat spam mail, and it can delay messages inbound by 15 min. This delay is only on initial contact from someone, and only when necessary.

Add New Email Address

1. Log into the webmail interface. webmail.domain.com as amail administrator.

2. After Login, select the Settings Icon from the left hand menu.

3. Expand Domain Settings and Select Users.

4. From the Main Window, select New.

5. Fill in new user details with the following format.

User Name: firstname.lastname

Pass: secure password

Display Name: FirstName LastName

Reply-To Email Address: firstname.lastname@domain.com

Backup Email Address: Optional (Use Existing personal address of user if filled in)

User Status: Enabled

Mailbox Size Limit: 50 MB

To Understand the steps required in general terms for upgrading DotNetNuke from versions as early as 2.00.04 through to DNN 06.01.03 or later.

Procedure

Specifically we wanted to take a version of DotNetNuke from 4.9.1 to 6.1.3 today and actually found that it worked perfectly.

We did take some steps that helped a lot. This may be of value to some of you.

Before we Began

1. Backed up the entire file system for the website.

2. Backed up the database on SQL server for the site in question.

3. Ensured we had a HOST login account that worked.

4. Ensured the server we were running on (Windows 2008 R2) was patched and running .Net Framework version 3.5 SP1.

5. If your site is busy, work out a way to stop the traffic. One way is to add a portal alias, like test.domain.com in your DNN website. Setup a DNS entry to that test.domain.com points to the IP address of your DNN web server. In IIS, setup a Binding, so that test.domain.com will answer for your site.

Then access the site on test.domain.com and check you can login, etc.

Then remove the binding in IIS for www.domain.com (temporarily while you play upgrade).

This way, the site will not answer normal user access, but will answer you when you go to test.domain.com.

Steps On Upgrade

On Codeplex, Click on View All Downloads

Find the version for the next upgrade step from the table above. Then find the Version Upgrade download link.

Download the .zip file to your server. Then extract the contents directly over the existing website directory structure.

You will be asked to overwrite files, Tick yes to all.

You will be asked to overwrite folders, Tick Apply to all – And continue.

Once you have extracted, hit your website in a browser, and watch the upgrade happen before your eyes.

Repeat the steps of backing up after each successful update, and download the next update package and repeat the process.

Tricky Bits

If you are using the XML module, on a DNN version before 5.3.0, then you should obtain the latest update of the module before moving past 5.3.0.

If you have the Ifinity URL Master module. We suggest turning it off to upgrade.

After Upgrade

In IIS you will wan to move the website to a new application pool that is running .net 3.5 or 4.0 Integrated. You cannot share application pools with earlier DNN versions that run on .net 2.0.

Jump into the HOST settings, and configure things like, friendly URL’s, DNN Host Menu Options, and performance settings.

If you disabled bindings (from the initial steps 5 above) re-enable them and test access.

DotNetNuke Upgrade Service and Support

We offer a DotNetNuke Support Service that can include the upgrading of DNN websites for you. This is especially useful if you are not confident with either .net websites or IIS server administration.

Follow these steps to create a SmarterMail IMAP connection to an iOS device with Firmware 5.0.x:

1. On the iPhone, tap Settings.

3. Tap Add Account.

4. Tap Other.

5. Tap Add Mail Account.

6. Complete the Name, Address(email address), Passwordand Descriptionfields.

7. Click Next.

On your Mac, open System Preferences.

Options

Push Notifications

With the phone and iPad, it is possible to use a service that pushes email messages to your phone, rather than your phone being set to constantly run off and check for new messages. This saves on battery life, saves on data used on your monthly plan and ensures your email messages always arrive on time.

If it is important to you to have email messages when they arrive, then this service is what you need. Known as Active Sync, it can be enabled by us with a a small additional cost for each account. $5 per month.

Larger Mail Accounts

Because your email remains on our servers, it means that your accounts will grow and grow in size. This takes up resources on our mail servers (which is fine) but if you like to keep past history of mail sent, and all your arriving email messages, then you will need to extend the storage space of your mail account on our servers.

Problem

A blank white screen with no settings available.

Solution

DotNetNuke can use jQuery to enable popup style and image rotator effects. These are great and a big improvements on technologies like flash. However it is not hard to find two separately coded jQuery modules that can cause conflicts when used on the same page as each other.

The Reason

The reason in most cases is that modules can be hard coded to use their own version of jQuery. (Think of jQuery as a plugin that is required for the code to load onto the web page).

The library that powers jQuery is often updated to include new features. Earlier version of DotNetNuke did not have any ability to load jQuery or reference it as “part” of the core of DNN.

So for any module written for early DNN versions, the library plugin for jQuery needed to be included or referenced to an online source like the free Google jQuery reference.

If two module are on the same page and calling different versions of jQuery into play, it is likely that one of the modules will conflict and fail to work correctly. Often it will be the more advanced or later built module that fails.

DotNetNuke Solution

The solution to this is to built a common core library into the core of DotNetNuke, and allow modules and other code to reference this single source when calling on the jQuery library for any reason.

DotNetNuke have included jQuery as an option in the host settings, to allow it to be loaded from there.

They run a release version of the jQuery library that is presumably updated with releases of DotNetNuke. The last version of DotNetNuke 5x shows this.

Modules can either call this library, or use their own library.

How Modules Use DNN version of jQuery or their Own version

Well developed code or modules will usually have a setting that allows you to reference the HOST DNN version of jQuery, or call into play the version that shipped with the module.

If the “Load jQuery” is ticked, the module will use the jQuery library that is shipped with the module.

If the option is not ticked, the module will use the DotNetNuke included version of jQuery.

Best Resolution

When conflicts occur, the best way to resolve it is to ensure that both modules are referencing the exact same jQuery library version. The easy way to do this is to ensure that both modules are NOT using their own version, or in our case “Load JQuery” is NOT CHECKED.

And, ensure that any other modules are also not referencing their own version of jQuery but are looking to the hosted jQuery. (Talk to the module developer on how to do this.)

What is the Take Home Message?

When a conflict occurs, there is usually no “developer” at fault, but rather an incompatibility between the ways that the jQuery is being called. Don’t assume that the last module installed is to blame.

In most cases the conflicts can be resolved using the steps outlined above. This assumes that the modules installed have similar flexibility as we do in our modules.

Setup Auto Reply (Auto-Responder) in SmarterMail

To configure Auto-Reply in SmarterMail, you login to the webmail account you wish to setup a reply for.

Then Select Settings / autoresponder

Select the Enable auto-responder / then the Auto-Responder Message tab

Type your Subject / Message

Then click Save, and you are done!
